Hello, everyone.
(huh-LOH, EV-ree-wun.)
When I heard today’s topic—"What is the bravest and most rewarding challenge you have ever taken?"—the very first answer that came to my mind was “working in Shanghai, China."
(when EYE hurd tuh-DAYZ TAH-pik—"WHT iz thuh BRAYV-ist and mohst REE-wur-ding CHAL-inj yoo hav EV-er TAY-kin?"—thuh VAYR-ee furst AN-ser thhat kaym TAY my MYND woz “WUR-king in shang-HY, CHY-nuh.")
At that time, I left my family in Japan and moved to Shanghai alone for a three-year assignment.
(at thhat TYM, EYE left my FAM-li in juh-PAN and moovd too shang-HY uh-LOHN for uh THREE-yeer uh-SYN-munt.)
It was definitely not an easy decision, but looking back now, it truly was the most meaningful challenge of my life.
(it woz DEF-uh-nit-lee NAHT an EE-zee dih-SIH-zhun, but LOOK-ing bak NOW, it TROO-ee woz thuh mohst MEAN-ing-ful CHAL-inj ov my LYF.)
Life there was a series of brand-new discoveries every day.
(lyf thayr woz uh SEER-eez ov brand-nyoo dih-SKUV-er-eez EV-ree day.)
In my work, by directly talking with local colleagues and clients, I could understand them much better than ever before by experiencing cultural and value differences firsthand.
(in my WURK, by dy-REKT-lee TAWK-ing with LOH-kul KAHL-egz and KLY-ents, EYE kood un-der-STAND them much BET-er thhan EV-er bih-fore by ik-SPEER-ee-uns-ing KUHL-chur-ul and VAL-yoo DIF-ur-ensiz furst-HAND.)
Although there were hard times, doing the job itself brought me genuine joy.
(awl-THOH thayr wur hard TYMZ, DOO-ing thuh jahb it-SELF brawt mee JEN-yoo-in JOY.)
At the same time, I made the most of my free time to enrich my life.
(at thuh saym TYM, EYE mayd thuh mohst ov my free tym too en-RICH my lyf.)
On my days off, I often traveled alone to various places or participated in local marathon races.
(ahn my dayz awf, EYE AH-fun TRAV-uld uh-LOHN too VAYR-ee-us PLAY-siz or par-TIH-sih-payt-id in LOH-kul MAHR-uh-thahn RAY-siz.)
Not only that, but I also actively joined many local Toastmasters clubs in China and met so many passionate friends.
(naht OH-nlee thhat, but EYE AHL-soh AK-tiv-lee JOYND MEE-nee LOH-kul TOHST-mas-terz klubz in CHY-nuh and met soh MEE-nee PASH-un-ut frendz.)
What made it even more unforgettable was that the pandemic broke out during my assignment.
(waht mayd it EE-vun mohr un-fur-GET-uh-bul woz thhat thuh pan-DEM-ik brohk owt DOOR-ing my uh-SYN-munt.)
Although it was an unexpected and difficult period, being able to get through those turbulent times in Shanghai has become an irreplaceable treasure for me.
(awl-THOH it woz an UN-ik-spek-tid and DIF-ih-kuult PEER-ee-ud, BEE-ing AY-bul too get throo thohz TUR-byu-lunt tymz in shang-HY haz bih-KUM an ir-ih-Suh-play-suh-bul TREZH-ur for mee.)
If I had refused this assignment out of fear back then, I definitely would not be standing here today.
(if EYE had ri-FYOOD this uh-SYN-munt owt ov feer bak thayn, EYE DEF-uh-nit-lee wood naht bee STAN-ding heer tuh-DAY.)
Stepping boldly into the unknown, and keeping a positive mindset to enjoy life no matter the environment—the experience brought by this challenge has become my greatest pride and treasure.

Thank you very much.
