是经历定义了你是谁，还是你的选择定义了你是谁？

「私たちは経験によって定義されるのか、それとも選択によって定義されるのか」
この問いを突き詰めるとき、私はどちらか一方だけを切り出すことはできないと考えます。なぜなら、人間の成長とは「経験」と「選択」が陰陽のようにつながり、互いに影響し合う「鶏と卵」の循環構造だからです。
私たちは、過去の経験をもとに次の選択をします。そして、その選択した行動が、また新たな経験となって積み重なっていきます。
私自身の話をすれば、学生時代の就職の失敗という苦い「経験」がありました。しかしそれが原動力となり、今の私は「学び続ける」という「選択」を毎日重ねています。そしてその学びの習慣が、今度は「新しいことに挑戦する」という次の経験のきっかけを生み出しています。このように、過去の経験は今の選択を方向付け、今の選択は未来の経験を形作っているのです。
あえて、この循環の中でどちらが重要かを切り出すとするならば、私は後者の「選択が経験に与える影響」に目を向けたいと思います。
なぜなら、私たちが時に行う「偶然の、予期しない選択」こそが、これまでの経験の延長線上にはなかった、まったく新しい知見や世界を連れてきてくれるからです。
過去の経験に囚われず、未知の選択へ一歩を踏み出すこと。その主体の決断こそが、成長のループを次のステージへと押し上げ、結果として「今の自分」を新しく定義していくのではないでしょうか。
