みなさん、こんにちは。
「一番好きなワールドカップのスター選手は誰ですか？」と聞かれたとき、多くの方はメッシ選手やクリスティアーノ・ロナウド選手といった、世界的に有名なフォワードの選手を思い浮かべるかもしれません。
ですが、実は私は、サッカー選手についてそれほど詳しいわけではありません。そんな私が「あえて一人挙げるなら誰か？」と考えたときに、真っ先に頭に浮かぶ選手がいます。
それが、元パラグアイ代表のゴールキーパー、チラベルト選手です。
私がなぜ彼を好きなのか。理由はとてもシンプルで、当時20代だった私にとって、彼の存在が「衝撃的すぎたから」です。
本来、ゴールキーパーというポジションは、自陣のゴールを守るのが仕事です。しかしチラベルト選手は、ゴールを守るだけでなく、相手のゴール前まで走っていって、フリーキックやペナルティキックを蹴り、なんと自分でゴールを決めてしまう選手でした。
「キーパーなのに点が取れる」というマンガのような展開を、ワールドカップという世界最高峰の舞台で本当にやってのける姿をリアルタイムで見て、「こんなすごい選手がいるのか！」と圧倒されたのを今でもよく覚えています。
サッカーに詳しくない私の記憶に、これほど強く刻まれている選手は他にいません。圧倒的な個性と存在感で世界中をワクワクさせてくれたチラベルト選手こそが、私にとって一番印象深く、大好きなワールドカップのスター選手です。

However, if I had to choose just one, there is a name that immediately comes to mind.

That is the former Paraguay goalkeeper, Chilavert.

The reason I like him is very simple: when I was in my twenties, his presence was just mind-blowing.

Usually, a goalkeeper’s job is to protect their own goal.
