Trust and slander, and modern SNS advertising
/trʌst ænd ˈslændər, ænd ˈmɑdərn ɛn-ɛs-ɛs ˈædvərtaɪzɪŋ/
Hello everyone.
/həˈloʊ ˈɛvriwʌn/
Today I would like to introduce an idiom from the ancient Chinese historical text “Strategies of the Warring States," the story of Zeng Shen’s mother, and discuss “trust and slander" through it.
/təˈdeɪ aɪ wʊd laɪk tu ˈɪntrədus ən ˈɪdiəm frəm ði ˈeɪnʃənt ˈʧaɪniz hɪˈstɔrɪkəl tɛkst “ˈstrætədʒiz ʌv ðə ˈwɔrɪŋ steɪts," ðə ˈstɔri ʌv zɛŋ ʃɛnz ˈmʌðər, ənd dɪˈskʌs “trʌst ænd ˈslændər" θru ɪt/
Even a mother who trusted her son one hundred percent was eventually driven by fear to throw down her shuttle and flee over the wall when the rumor that “Zeng Shen has committed murder" was brought to her by the first person, the second person, and finally a third person.
/ˈivən ə ˈmʌðər hu ˈtrʌstəd hɜr sʌn wʌn ˈhʌndrəd pərˈsɛnt wʌz ɪˈvɛnʧuəli ˈdrɪvən baɪ fɪr tu θroʊ daʊn hɜr ˈʃʌtəl ənd fli ˈoʊvər ðə wɔl wɛn ðə ˈrumər ðæt “zɛŋ ʃɛnz hæz kəˈmɪtəd ˈmɜrdər" wʌz brɔt tu hɜr baɪ ðə fɜrst ˈpɜrsən, ðə ˈsɛkənd ˈpɜrsən, ənd ˈfaɪnəli ə θərd ˈpɜrsən/
This story illustrates how easily human hearts can be shaken by groundless rumors and malicious gossip when they are persistently repeated.
/ðɪs ˈstɔri ˈɪləˌstreɪts haʊ ˈizɪli ˈhjumən hɑrts kən bi ˈʃeɪkən baɪ ˈgraʊndləs ˈrumərz ənd məˈlɪʃəs ˈɡɑsəp wɛn ðeɪ ɑr pərˈsɪstəntli rɪˈpitəd/
This story closely mirrors the reality of the SNS platforms we face every day.
/ðɪs ˈstɔri ˈkloʊsli ˈmɪrərz ði riˈæləti ʌv ði ɛn-ɛs-ɛs ˈplætfɔrmz wi feɪs ˈɛvri deɪ/
Right now, our timelines are flooded with advertisements that prey on people’s deep-seated worries regarding investment, beauty, and health.
/raɪt naʊ, aʊər ˈtaɪmˌlaɪnz ɑr ˈflʌdəd wɪð ˈædvərtaɪzmənts ðæt preɪ ɑn ˈpipəlz dip-ˈsitəd ˈwɜriz rɪˈgɑrdɪŋ ɪnˈvɛstmənt, ˈbjuti, ənd hɛlθ/
Even when the content is obviously absurd upon close inspection, when the exact same information is displayed over and over again amidst an asymmetry of information, people begin to mistake it for “the truth of the world."
/ˈivən wɛn ðə ˈkɑntɛnt ɪz ˈɑbviəsli əbˈsɜrd əˈpɑn kloʊs ɪnˈspɛkʃən, wɛn ði ɪgˈzækt seɪm ˌɪnfərˈmeɪʃən ɪz dɪˈspleɪd ˈoʊvər ənd ˈoʊvər əˈgɛn əˈmɪst ən əˈsɪmətri ʌv ˌɪnfərˈmeɪʃən, ˈpipəlz bɪˈgɪn tu mɪˈsteɪk ɪt fɔr “ðə truθ ʌv ðə wɜrld"/
This is nothing less than a modern version of “three men make a tiger."
/ðɪs ɪz ˈnʌθɪŋ lɛs ðæn ə ˈmɑdərn ˈvɜrʒən ʌv “θri mɛn meɪk ə ˈtaɪgər"/
What is most unforgivable is that this structure—"exploiting the vulnerability of people who are already struggling to extract even more money from them"—is left unchecked.
/wʌt ɪz moʊst ˌʌnfərˈgɪvəbəl ɪz ðæt ðɪs ˈstrʌktʃər—"ɪkˈsplɔɪtɪŋ ðə ˌvʌlnərəˈbɪləti ʌv ˈpipəlz hu ɑr ɔlˈrɛdi ˈstrʌgəlɪŋ tu ɪkˈstrækt ˈivən mɔr ˈmʌni frəm ðɛm"—ɪz lɛft ˈʧɛkt/
Behind the immense influence of SNS and the business models of these platforms, those who genuinely need help end up becoming victims.
/bɪˈhaɪnd ði ɪˈmɛns ˈɪnfluəns ʌv ɛn-ɛs-ɛs ənd ðə ˈbɪznəs ˈmɑdəlz ʌv ðiz ˈplætfɔrmz, ðoʊz hu ˈdʒɛnəwəli nid hɛlp ɛnd ʌp bɪˈkʌmɪŋ ˈvɪktɪmz/
The self-regulation of platforms has its limits. Precisely for this reason, to prevent further victims, robust societal regulations are necessary, such as making background verification for advertisers mandatory and holding platforms legally responsible for non-compliant ads.
/ðə sɛlf-ˈrɛgjəˌleɪʃən ʌv ˈplætfɔrmz hæz ɪts ˈlɪmɪts. prɪˈsaɪsli fɔr ðɪs ˈrizən, tu prɪˈvɛnt ˈfɜrðər ˈvɪktɪmz, roʊˈbʌst səˈsaɪətəl ˌrɛgjəˈleɪʃənz ɑr ˈnɛsəˌsɛri, səʧ æz ˈmeɪkɪŋ ˈbækˌgraʊnd ˌvɛrəfəˈkeɪʃən fɔr ˈædvərtaɪzərz ˈmændəˌtɔri ənd ˈhoʊldɪŋ ˈplætfɔrmz ˈligəli rɪˈspɑnsəbəl fɔr nɑn-kəmˈplaɪənt ædz/
What actions do we need to take right now to prevent our trust and our society from being shaken by groundless rumors, malicious gossip, and clever fraudulent advertising?
/wʌt ˈækʃənz du wi nid tu teɪk raɪt naʊ tu prɪˈvɛnt aʊər trʌst ənd aʊər səˈsaɪəti frəm ˈbiɪŋ ˈʃeɪkən baɪ ˈgraʊndləs ˈrumərz, məˈlɪʃəs ˈɡɑsəp, ənd ˈklɛvər ˈfrɔdʒələnt ˈædvərtaɪzɪŋ/
I sincerely hope we can all think about this problem together.
/aɪ sɪnˈsɪrli hoʊp wi kən ɔl θɪŋk əˈbaʊt ðɪs ˈprɑbləm təˈgɛðər/
Thank you very much."
