Speech: Time Will Be on Our Side
Hello, everyone!

/həˈloʊ, ˈɛvriˌwʌn/

The American entrepreneur Jim Rohn once said, “Most people overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”

/ði əˈmɛrɪkən ˌɑntrəprəˈnɜr dʒɪm roʊn wʌns sɛd, “moʊst ˈpipəl ˌoʊvərˈɛstəˌmeɪt wʌt ðeɪ kæn du ɪn ə jɪr, ænd ˌʌndərˈɛstəˌmeɪt wʌt ðeɪ kæn du ɪn tɛn jɪrz.”/

When I first heard these words and looked back on my own life, they resonated with me deeply.

/wɛn aɪ fɜrst hɜrd ðiz wɜrdz ænd lʊkt bæk ɑn maɪ oʊn laɪf, ðeɪ ˈrɛzəˌneɪtɪd wɪð mi ˈdipli./

As a software engineer, there were many programs in the past that were so difficult I ended up giving up on them.

/æz ə ˈsɔftˌwɛr ˈɛndʒəˈnɪr, ðɛr wɜr ˈmɛni ˈproʊˌgræmz ɪn ðə pæst ðæt wɜr soʊ ˈdɪfɪkəlt aɪ ˈɛndəd ʌp ˈgɪvɪŋ ʌp ɑn ðɛm./

No matter how seriously and hard I tried back then, I simply could not make them work.

/noʊ ˈmætər haʊ ˈsɪriəsli ænd hɑrd aɪ traɪd bæk ðɛn, aɪ ˈsɪmpli kʊd nɑt meɪk ðɛm wɜrk./

But curiously enough, when I had to face those same challenges years later, I found myself implementing them with surprising ease—and this happened multiple times.

/bʌt ˈkjʊriəsli ɪˈnʌf, wɛn aɪ hæd tu feɪs ðoʊz seɪm ˈtʃælɪndʒɪz jɪrz ˈleɪtər, aɪ faʊnd maɪˈsɛlf ˈɪmpləˌmɛntɪŋ ðɛm wɪð sərˈpraɪzɪŋ iz—ænd ðɪs ˈhæpənd ˈmʌltəpəl taɪmz./

I had a similar experience when studying for English exams.

/aɪ hæd ə ˈsɪmələr ɪkˈspɪriəns wɛn ˈstʌdiɪŋ fɔr ˈɪŋglɪʃ ɪgˈzæmz./

A target score that once felt impossibly high and required all my effort eventually became just a stepping stone through daily accumulation.

/ə ˈtɑrgət skɔr ðæt wʌns fɛlt ɪmˈpɑsəbli haɪ ænd riˈkwaɪərd ɔl maɪ ˈɛfərt ɪˈvɛntʃuəli bɪˈkeɪm dʒʌst ə ˈstɛpɪŋ stoʊn θru ˈdeɪli əˌkjumjəˈleɪʃən./

Because I gave my all during that first attempt, even though I didn’t see immediate results, the foundation of knowledge and thinking was quietly taking root behind the scenes.

/bɪˈkəz aɪ geɪv maɪ ɔl ˈdʊrɪŋ ðæt fɜrst əˈtɛmpt, ˈivɪn ðoʊ aɪ ˈdɪdənt si ɪˈmidiət rɪˈzʌlts, ðə faʊnˈdeɪʃən ʌv ˈnɑlɪdʒ ænd ˈθɪŋkɪŋ wʌz ˈkwaɪətli ˈteɪkɪŋ rut bɪˈhaɪnd ðə sinz./

We often rush and demand instant results.

/wi ˈɔfən rʌʃ ænd dɪˈmænd ˈɪnstənt rɪˈzʌlts./

However, as long as we make time our ally, we can reach places far beyond what we ever imagined.

/haʊˈɛvər, æz lɔŋ æz wi meɪk taɪm ˈaʊər ˈælaɪ, wi kæn ritʃ ˈpleɪsəz fɑr bɪˈjɑnd wʌt wi ˈɛvər ɪˈmædʒənd./

That is why I firmly believe today: you can set your goals much higher than you think.

/ðæt ɪz waɪ aɪ ˈfɜrmli bɪˈliv təˈdeɪ: ju kæn sɛt jʊər goʊlz mʌtʃ ˈhaɪər ðæn ju θɪŋk./

Even if you hit a wall on your first try, as long as you keep moving forward, time will always reward your efforts.

/ˈivɪn ɪf ju hɪt ə wɔl ɑn jʊər fɜrst traɪ, æz lɔŋ æz ju kip ˈmuvɪŋ ˈfɔrwərd, taɪm wɪl ˈɔlweɪz rɪˈwɔrd jʊər ˈɛfərts./

I invite you all to set an ambitious goal that might seem a bit out of reach right now, and take that step forward.

/aɪ ɪnˈvaɪt ju ɔl tu sɛt æn æmˈbɪʃəs goʊl ðæt maɪt sim ə bɪt aʊt ʌv ritʃ raɪt naʊ, ænd teɪk ðæt stɛp ˈfɔrwərd./

Thank you very much!

/θæŋk ju ˈvɛri mʌtʃ!/
